What is CBT-i?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) is a non-medication approach to treating insomnia. CBT-i strategies may include sleep restriction, stimulus control, sleep hygiene, as well as stress management skills. Treatment is conducted over a 6-8 week period.
For patients who have difficulty falling or staying sleep, CBT-i can be effective. Even if sleep problems are related to other factors like depression, anxiety or a medical problem, CBT-i can help.
CBT-i helps patients change actions or thoughts that interfere with the ability to sleep well. CBT-i also empowers patients in order to help them understand sleep problems, identify factors that impact sleep and use cognitive and behavioral strategies to overcome sleep issues. CBT-i can be done while continuing on sleep medications, if needed.
