Pain Relief From Prolotherapy

Nancy is a 70 year old active woman who had a right knee replacement a few years back for severe osteoarthritis. Although she got some pain relief, she continued to have discomfort in her right knee. Given her less than optimal right knee surgery, she was reluctant to have the left knee done. In her search for nonsurgical options she came across prolotherapy and came to see me.

After examining Nancy and reviewing her past medical records, we discussed several options including anti-inflammatory diet, weight loss, acupuncture and prolo, as it is commonly known. Nancy felt her diet was good and acupuncture was helpful, but not enduring. Ultimately she decided on a course of prolo.

Prolo has been around since the 1950’s and involves the injection of dextrose (sugar water) into damaged cartilage, tendons and ligaments. The dextrose stimulates the body to send repair factors in high concentration into the injected tissue thus hastening the repair. It’s generally recommended to have 4 to 6 sessions of prolo, 3 to 4 weeks apart for maximum benefit.

Nancy reported a 70% improvement in her left knee pain after her first prolo session, and an 85% improvement after her second session. She now gets maintenance prolo once or twice a year if the pain starts to creep back or she is planning a trip which requires a lot of walking.

Prolo is ideal for arthritis pain, any ligamentous or tendon injury or acute sprains and strains due to accidents or sports injuries.
